Force India will reveal their drivers for 2012 very soon.
For quite a long time now, Vijay Mallya, the still-in-charge team boss of Force India, has said that he will announce the teams drivers for 2012, ‘shortly’, and since this has been going on since before the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, we now know nothing more or less than we did then.
Since November, the rumour mills have been working overtime in producing all sorts of juicy and interesting driver line-ups. I´ve seen Rubens Barrichello taking one seat, with Nico Hulkenberg in the other. Then I heard Petrov would get one of the Force India seats, next to Adrian Sutil and the next thing you know, none of the drivers they raced with in 2011, are apparently staying.
The silly season just extended a little further, when yesterday, Wednesday, it was announced that neither Jaime Alguersuari or Sebastién Buemi would keep their seats at Toro Rosso, and were instead replaced by Daniel Ricciardo and Jean-Eric Vergne. I will say that Ricciardo was expected, but now that Alguersuari and Buemi are without a drive, suddenly Force India has two more drivers to think about.
Sutil out-performed his rookie team mate Paul Di Resta in eleven races this season, including retirements, and while it was expected that the experienced driver would beat the rookie, Di Resta certainly impressed, having scored points in eight races and collecting 13th in the drivers standings. The results of 2011 meant that Force India were capable of securing sixth in the constructor’s championship, just four points behind Lotus(formerly known as Renault). Indeed an impressive feat.
So what now? Both Sutil and Di Resta are rumoured to be axed from the line-up, which seems a tad too harsh, at least for Sutil. I´d say both drivers deserve the drive. Other reports indicate that Di Resta is safe, but will be partnered with Nico Hulkenberg. But there could be a twist to the whole decision-making thing.
For some time, mainly almost all of 2011, the Kingfisher Airline run by Mallya, is struggling to keep afloat. $9.5m was paid from the airline to the team in 2010, and also this year in sponsorship. This added with another $15.5m from the empire he runs, and it´s a huge mystery how the team is looking at a $42m loss. There are reportedly unpaid bills in the region $100m, and though the new ‘partner’ Sahara group has paid $33m to join the fun, there is still a long way to go for the team to break even.
The financial situation of the airline is so grave, that the fuel used in the planes, must be paid in cash and a report shows that up to half the flights scheduled, are cancelled. The entire situation means that Force India will have bigger trouble finding money for 2012 and beyond, even if the Indian government opens up for foreign investments in the airline company.
Mallya has been rumoured to be fired as team principal, if you go back a little while to some earlier posts, you will find that even though Mallya insists the team has taken on a partner, Sahara Group, it has in fact been sold. Mallya is a mere employee. For now, Mallya will need all his skills in order to fix the problems mounting. The driver line-up is expected very soon. Of course, that could mean weeks….
